J.J. Thomson discovered something smaller than an atom. His discovery had a negative charge. It was the electron. Thomson figured his negatively charged "corpuscles" accounted for about one-thousandth of the mass of a hydrogen atom.

Equipment used: Thomson used a cathode ray tube (CRT), which is a vacuum tube containing a source of electrons.

Max Planck formulated the quantum theory in 1900, around the same time Thomson made his discovery. The quantum theory explained why things that are the color black get hot.
